Un cucchiaio iscritto rinvenuto recentemente a Ichtratzheim

    This paper considers the inscription (Mattevs) on a spoon’s handle found in year 2011 in the tomb 108 at Ichtratzheim (Bas-Rhin). The inscription seems made by a craftsman who had limited familiarity with the Latin alphabet and perhaps copied from memory, an original he saw. We do not know if one wanted here indicate precisely the apostle and is highly uncertain the interpretation of the name as a manifestation of the Christian faith. It is possible that a production center of these spoons were found in Byzantine world. Recent findings from Ravenna show us the frequency of these in that city.

    Questo contributo esamina l’iscrizione (Mattevs) sul manico di un cucchiaio rinvenuto nel 2011 nella tomba 108 a Ichtratzheim (Bas-Rhin). L’iscrizione pare opera di un artigiano che aveva scarsa familiarità con l’alfabeto latino e forse poté copiare a memoria un originale da lui visto. Non sappiamo se qui si sia voluto indicare proprio l’apostolo e rimane incerta pertanto l’interpretazione dell’epigrafe come espressione delle fede cristiana. È possibile che oggetti simili forssero prodotti nell’areabizantina. Recenti rinvenimenti di oggetti simili a Ravenna mostrano la loro frequenza in questa città.
