    Engraved gems (intaglios and cameos), as well as metallic finger rings, can be calibrated chronologically by various exogenous factors (excavation context, ancient manuscript sources, parallels with coins and seals) as much as endogenous (style, shape of the gemstone, iconography). For some inscriptions appearing on these artefacts, intrinsically or in combination with the figurative register, they participate in these means of dating.

    Les pierres gravées (intailles et camées), ainsi que les anneaux métalliques, peuvent être calibrés chronologiquement par différents moyens exogènes (contexte de fouille, sources manuscrites antiques, parallèles avec les monnaies et les sceaux) autant qu’endogènes (style, forme de la gemme, iconographie). Les inscriptions apparaissant sur ces artefacts, intrinsèquement ou en combinaison avec le registre figuré, participent, pour certaines, de ces moyens de datation.
