    The relationship between Alienor (c. 1120/22-1204) and Fontevraud was more complex than has often been said. It is only in 1146 that we find her mentioned, incidentally, as having approved of a gift to the nuns from her first husband Louis the VIIth and when, after having married Henry Plantagenet, she visited the abbey for the first time in 1152, she only confirmed her approval. Her first really personal gift — perhaps intended to secure the support of Fontevraud — occurred only in 1172/73, just before the great revolt against Henry which she greatly helped to start. On the other hand, when she came back to France for some time (1185/86), after her long exile precisely due to the failure of that revolt, she loaded the Order with favours. After 1190, now a widow and queen - mother, she showed great kindness to the abbey where she retired in 1194. But, to her, Fontevraud was chiefly a strategic position at the time when she was the very soul of the opposition to Philip Augustus. She took the habit of the Order only on her death - bed and was buried in the abbey - church where her corpse - effigy can still be seen.

    Les rapports d'Aliénor (v. 1120/22-1204) avec Fontevraud ont été plus complexes qu'on ne l'a souvent dit. Ce n'est qu'en 1146 qu'on la trouve citée incidemment comme approuvant un don aux moniales de son premier époux Louis VII. Elle ne fit que confirmer cette approbation quand, remariée à Henri Plantegenêt, elle visita pour la première fois l'abbaye en 1152. Sa première donation vraiment personnelle — destinée à s'assurer l'appui fontevriste ( ?) — n'intervint qu'en 1172/73, à la veille de la vaste révolte qu'elle contribua largement à susciter contre Henri. En revanche, au lendemain de son long exil consécutif à l'échec de cette révolte, elle multiplia ses faveurs envers l'Ordre dès son retour passager en France en 1185/86. Après 1190, désormais veuve et reine-mère, sa sollicitude fut remarquable pour l'abbaye où elle se retira en 1194. Mais elle la considéra surtout comme une base d'opérations alors qu'elle fut l'âme de la résistance à Philippe Auguste. Elle ne prit l'habit de l'Ordre que mourante, avant d'être inhumée dans l'abbatiale qui conserve son gisant.
