Les impondérables de la recherche iconographique. A propos d'un livre récent sur le thème de la glorification de l'Église et de la Vierge dans l'art médiéval

    The study of iconography, an integral part of art history, must develop out of the image itself and not out of its doctrinal content. Whatever the dependence of an image on a idea, the theological, political or other kind of message only appears in the representation. Thus, it is the way in which the representation is formulated which determines its art historical classification. Doctrinal history only enters into this operation in order to explain the meaning and evolution of a set of images, or of an iconographical type or motif. It has no independent status within the iconographical research. It is important to stress these methodological imperatives in the light of a book recently written by M.-L. Thérel, which, although it offers us a very complete material concerning the relationship between the themes of the Virgin and the Church in the Middle Ages, is set out according to problems of doctrinal history, with the result that the images are often reduced to an illustration of ideas while the study of their evolution fails to comply with that of an autonomous historical research.

    La recherche iconographique, partie intégrante de l'histoire de l'art, part du fait artistique et non de son contenu doctrinal. Quelle que soit la dépendance de l'image vis-à-vis d'une idée, c'est dans la figuration seulement que se matérialise le message théologique, politique ou autre. Par conséquent, c'est la formule figurative qui fait l'objet du classement historique en iconographie. L'histoire doctrinale n'intervient en cette démarche que pour expliquer le sens et l'évolution d'une disposition des images, d'un type ou d'un motif iconographique. Elle n'a aucunement un statut autonome dans le système épistémologique de la recherche iconographique. Il importe de rappeler ces impératifs méthodologiques à propos du livre récent de M.-L. Thérel, ouvrage qui, certes, réunit une documentation très complète sur les rapports entre le thème de la Vierge et celui de l'Église au moyen âge, ouvrage, pourtant, qui s'organise autour des questions de l'histoire doctrinale, les images étant souvent réduites à une illustration des idées et l'examen de leur évolution n'ayant pas le statut d'une discipline historique à part entière.
