The present article examines the role of the poet in contemporary society, notably devoted to audiovisual and communication technologies. Providing definitions about the role of the poet as creator by some great writers of history, this work advances towards the two poles around which the poetic fact itself pivots: form and content. The communication in a series of differentiated levels, as well as the investigation in language itself and the innovative aesthetic impulse are the great movers of the human creation in the field of the poetry. From this historical dilemma, the most prominent poetic trends in Spanish poetry throughout the twentieth century are reviewed, providing a record of the main creative movements that have taken place in the last hundred years, as an explanation of the path that contemporary Spanish poetry has followed until the present day.
