To trial the concrete in a practical setting, a 1,000m 2 area of the new TiO 2 road paving was laid on a road in the Dutch city of Hengelo, following extensive laboratory testing. A control area of road of the same size was surfaced with normal concrete paving slabs.
"[The TiO 2 concrete] could be a very feasible solution for inner city areas where they have a problem with air pollution," he said.
"You can apply it very easily in the normal production [of asphalt]," says [Jos Brouwers]. "It doesn't require any maintenance; it doesn't wear off with normal use."
