    The drought has produced an aptitude for change, as well as various initiatives to combat the problem. Thus, the government has organised the agricultural colonisation of valleys by establishing within designated areas thousands of farmers, supervised by a specialised state organisation. Rightly or wrongly this operation has been considered as a means of combating the drought, although irrigation has not been used. Moreover the new settlements of the middle basin of the Nakambé (White Volta) might be considered as a initiative.

    La sécheresse de la fin des années 1960 a suscité l'aptitude au changement et des initiatives de lutte. Ainsi le gouvernement a organisé la colonisation agricole des vallées, en installant sur des périmètres aménagés des milliers d'exploitants encadrés par une structure spécialisée de l'Etat. A tort ou à raison, cette opération a été considérée comme un moyen de lutte contre la sécheresse, sans qu'il y ait recours à l'irrigation. Aussi les villages de colonisation du moyen bassin du Nakambé (Volta Blanche) peuvent être considérés comme une frange pionnière
