    Gabriele Zanetto and the postmodern. – This article discusses the relationship between Italian geographer Gabriele Zanetto and ‘the postmodern”. More specifically, it reflects on his writings directly addressing the postmodern by linking them to his intellectual profile and academic persona. The key argument is that Zanetto, at least in some crucial moments of his career, was faced with the challenges typical of every scholar preoccupied with the complex transition between the modern an the postmodern. What emerges is a scholarly and intellectual profile torn between the desire to go with the flow of the postmodern wave and its relativism, on the one hand, and the (modern) academic tendency to look for systematic classifications of the new trends, in geography and beyond. Zanetto’s work has indeed engaged with the postmodern in some path breaking interventions where he disserts on the epochal shifts and the epistemological consequences of this paradigmatic change for the discipline, but also for the contemporary production and circulation of knowledge at large. The article ends by suggesting that some of these tensions reflect at the same time a radical in the ways in which understand geography as a discipline as well as some of the most original and fascinating characteristics of his academic personality, a personality that perhaps in the ‘postmodern writings’ has offered some of the most significant contribution to the field.

    Gabriele Zanetto et le postmoderne. – Cet article traite de la relation entre le géographe italien Gabriele Zanetto et le «postmoderne». Plus précisément, l’article réflechit sur ses écrits qui traitent directement du postmoderne, en les réferant à son profil intellectuel et académique. L’argument clé c’est que Zanetto, au moins dans certains moments cruciaux de sa carrière, s’est mésuré avec des défis qui sont typiques de chaque savant intéressé à la transition complexe entre le moderne et le postmoderne. Ce qui émerge est un profil scientifique et intellectuel déchiré entre le désir d’aller avec le courant de la vague postmoderne et son relativisme, d›une part, et la tendance académique (moderne) de chercher des classifications systématiques des nouvelles tendances, soit à l’intérieur qu’au délà de la géographie. Le travail de Zanetto est en effet engagé avec le postmoderne dans certains interventions de rupture, où il disserte sur les changements d’époque et les conséquences épistémologiques de ce changement de paradigme pour ce qui concerne pas seulement la discipline, mais aussi la production contemporaine et la circulation des connaissances au sens large. L’article termine en suggérant que certaines de ces tensions reflètent dans le même temps un radical dans la manière dont ells comprennent la géographie comme discipline, ainsi que quelques-unes des caractéristiques les plus originales et les plus fascinantes de sa personnalité académique: un personnalité qui peut-être dans les «écrits postmodernes» a offert une partie de sa contribution la plus significative dans le domaine.

    Questo articolo tratta il rapporto tra il geografo Gabriele Zanetto e il postmoderno. In particolare, il saggio discute il rapporto tra gli scritti di Zanetto sul postmoderno (pochi ma molto incisivi) e la sua personalità intellettuale ed accademica. L’argomento centrale è che Zanetto, almeno in alcune fasi importanti del suo percorso di ricercatore, si sia trovato al centro di una serie di tensioni tipiche di chi si è occupato in profondità del complesso passaggio tra moderno e postmoderno. Emerge un quadro nel quale al rifiuto di elaborate una sistematica analisi della nuova epoca, Zanetto alterna a tratti il richiamo a modelli tipicamente moderni, pur riconoscendone parzialità e instabilità. Zanetto inoltre si intrattiene non solo sul passaggio epocale che è stato identificato, appunto, come post-modernità, ma discute anche della svolta epistemologica associata all’evento del postmoderno inteso come approccio alla conoscenza. L’articolo conclude suggerendo che le tensioni presenti nei suoi scritti sul postmoderno riflettono non solo i segni di un passaggio epocale e paradigmatico, ma anche alcuni aspetti assolutamente originali della sua figura intellettuale, una figura che proprio su questo passaggio ha scritto alcune delle sue più belle pagine di geografia.
