US crop production increases and looks to opportunities in Asia

After the drought of 2012, part of the country saw very different weather in 2013, Joseph Glauber, chief economist for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) explained to IM: "The eastern part of the country is in very good shape and a lot of the areas that were in severe drought last year are now out of drought completely. We actually had some wetter weather - a very wet spring that hampered plantings in some of those regions." Despite the late planting season, yields from the maize, soybean and wheat crops are expected to be good. However, Glauber told IM, "not only did some producers have to shift to shorter-term varieties but, because the crop will mature a little late, some of it will be more exposed to frost in the fall".
China is not the sole market in which US agriculture has the potential for growth, Glauber believes: "I think [in] the Asian markets, in general, we're seeing growth and [we're seeing] over the longer run that India too will be looking for more protein, if it's not directly in terms of grain it will be in terms of animal products (...) there will continue to be strong demand in Asia."
