This paper examines the “sociological” scope of Zola’s The Fortune of the Rougons. What meaning does the text qua novel give society and “social man” ? According to which paradigms is “the social” grasped ? Zola, in the way he paints urban spaces, seems to proceed as if he were a quasi essentialist sociologist describing environments and the behaviour patterns relevant to them. But the story originates in his work only through the movement of characters whose appetites are unleashed in a “democratic” society perpetually reshaping itself. At the heart of the novel, supreme agent of this movement, are those characters between classes, those “déclassés” characters who testify to a gap between self and self, self and the social world. The importance in the novel of a space apart (the Aire Saint-Mitre) nonetheless produces another vision of society and delivers, in a way, its meaning. Perhaps a particular form of social “vision” thus emerges form the novel : a critical perspective on the social order, which is also sensitive to emerging individualities and to other ways of constituting social order...

On se propose d’examiner ici la portée « sociologique » de La Fortune des Rougon. Quel(s) sens le texte, comme roman, donne-t-il à la société et à l’« homme social » ? Selon quels paradigmes le social y est-il appréhendé ? Zola, dans sa peinture de l’espace urbain, semble procéder en sociologue presque fixiste des milieux et des habitus. Mais le récit ne naît chez lui que du mouvement de personnages aux appétits déchaînés, dans une société « démocratique » en perpétuelle recomposition. Au coeur du roman, agents par excellence de ce mouvement, des personnages entre deux classes, « déclassés », qui témoignent d’un écart, de soi à soi ou de soi au monde social. L’importance dans l’oeuvre d’un espace à part (l’Aire Saint-Mittre) a cependant pour effet de produire une autre vision de la société et d’en dire, en un sens, la vérité. Peut-être un « regard » sociologique singulier émerge-t-il : regard critique sur l’ordre social, mais attentif à la saisie des singularités émergentes et à ce qui pourrait faire société autrement...
