    The end of year theatrical revue is a genre that plays with its own codes and puts its own public on stage in a game of mirrors. This paper focuses on two devices that draw attention to this process of self-representation : the character of the commenting “compère” and the traditional “scene in the audience.” The paper not only examines the functions of these devices, but also points to a typology of the spectators represented, in both the Parisian and the Brussels revues. In staging their audience and giving it specific social characteristics, the revue writers were choosing to foreground a particular society, which is shown to dovetail with the other characters and themes of their plays

    La revue de fin d’année est un genre théâtral qui joue sur ses codes et représente sur scène son propre public dans un jeu de miroir. L’article propose d’analyser deux procédés qui donnent à voir cette autoreprésentation : le personnage du « compère » et la traditionnelle « scène dans la salle ». Il s’agit non seulement de s’interroger sur les fonctions de ces mécanismes, mais aussi de déceler une typologie des spectateurs représentés, dans les revues tant parisiennes que bruxelloises. En mettant en scène leur public et en lui conférant des caractéristiques sociales particulières, les revuistes choisissent de mettre en évidence une certaine société, qui se révèle en accord avec les autres personnages et thématiques de leurs pièces
