Large forest fires in mainland Portugal, brief characterization

    Throughout the years we have seen a new reality in Portugal regarding large forest fires, since they have become increasingly important. Although large forest fires (LFFs) in Portugal represent a small fraction of the total of occurrences, in keeping with the trends of the Mediterranean Basin, they are responsible for a large percentage of burned area. In the last ten years, the largest forest fires in the Portuguese territory (mega-fires) have been recorded, and although they do not cover a larger percentage of LFFs there is more burned area, which means that, on average, each LFF burned more area when compared to the previous decades. On the one hand, this resulted in the reduction of the number of LFFs throughout the years ; on the other hand, there is an increase in the individual area of the larger “large fires”.

    Au fil des ans, les grands incendies de forêt au Portugal ont évolué pour devenir de plus en plus importants. Bien que les Grands Incendies de Forêt (GIF) au Portugal représentent une part limitée du nombre total d’occurences, conformément à d’autres situations du bassin méditerranéen, ces derniers sont à l’origine d’une grande partie des superficies incendiées. Au cours des dix dernières années, les plus grands incendies du territoire portugais (méga-incendies) ont été observés et, bien qu’ils ne représentent qu’une faible proportion du nombre de GIFs, ils affectent une part croissante des superficies brûlées. Cela signifie qu’en moyenne chaque GIF a brûlé une étendue plus importante qu’au cours des décennies précédentes. D’un côté, ce phénomène a produit une réduction du nombre de GIFs d’année en année ; de l’autre s’est manifesté un accroissement de la taille des plus importants “grands incendies”.
