As part of the DAI Rom project on the territory of Albano, an analysis of brick stamps discovered in the castra Albana and surrounding area, along with an examination of the monuments and data from archaeological contexts, produced new information about the changes to and development of this territory from the construction of Domitian’s imperial villa to that of the Legio II Parthica fortress at the beginning of the 3rd century AD. The barracks of the soldiers and some sectors of the amphitheatre located to the northeast of the camp were clad with opus listatum; while opus testaceum was only used for the two bath complexes. One of these was inside the castra and incorporated a domed hall of Domitian’s villa. The other was built during the reign of Caracalla in the canabae legionis southwest of the Via Appia. Their large size and the presence of the military camp just XV miles from Rome probably served to show far and wide the power of the emperor and his army. The production of bricks stamped by the Legio II Parthica also seems attributable to an affirmation of the role of the imperial soldiers in the 3rd century AD. Although the largest number of bricks come from this territory, these were not exclusively produced for the castra Albana.
