Las figurillas epiclásicas de la Pirámide de las Flores de Xochitecatl, Tlax., México: tipología y simbolismo

    En la década de los setenta, Bodo Spranz propuso que las figurillas de Xochitecatl eran antiguas versiones de las deidades mexicas Tlazolteotl y Xochitecatl. Consecuentemente, aludían a la fertilidad y al sacrificio. Dos décadas más tarde, la investigación del sitio llevó a excavaciones sistemáticas en la Pirámide de las Flores. Siete depósitos rituales epiclásicos fueron descubiertos en las escaleras del edificio. Contenían más de 350 figurillas antropomorfas, vasijas cerámicas, representaciones de deidades y cuchillos de obsidiana. El proyecto Xochitecatl subrayó la recurrencia del tema de la fertilidad: la figura femenina personificándose en el Cerro de la Malinche y en las figurillas. Este trabajo desea profundizar el análisis iconográfico con una nueva tipología que explora factores morfológicos y de tocado. Las interpretaciones del proyecto Xochitecatl son aquí respaldadas por el simbolismo de las posturas y de las expresiones. Asimismo, se dibuja una continuidad entre estas figurillas y ceremonias rituales mexicas celebradas en honor a deidades de la fertilidad. La frecuencia de los motivos de flores, círculos, ollin y “flor-sangre” refuerza este tópico. La repartición de tipos por ofrenda revela una voluntad de optimizar la eficacia ritual. Las figurillas de Xochitecatl son también piezas de peculiar interés en el contexto del Altiplano epiclásico: ponen a la luz fuertes contactos con la Costa del Golfo y la región maya de Tabasco.

    When Bodo Spranz wrote in the 1970’s about the figurines of Xochitecatl, he discussed that they were proto versions of Tlazolteotl and Xochiquetzal mexica deities. Therefore, they carried an allusion of fertility and sacrifice. Two decades later, the investigations of the site led to the systematic excavations of the Pirámide de las Flores. Seven Epiclassic ritual deposits are discovered in the stairs of the monument. They contained in addition to ceramic pots, divinities representations, obsidian blades, more than 350 anthropomorphic figurines. The Xochitecatl project underlighted a recurrence of the fertility topic conveyed by the feminine image embodied both in the importance of the Malinche Cerro and of the figurines. The present work aims to deepen iconographical analysis toward a new typology that considers morphotechnique and headdress vectors. The interpretations of the Xochitecatl project are here supported by the symbolism of the postures and the expressions. A continuity between these figurines and the Mexica rituals ceremonies which were dedicated to the fertility goddesses is drawn. The frequency of the motives as flowers, circles, ollin and « blood flower » reinforces this issue. The figurines types repartition on each deposit reveals a will aiming to intensifying the religious act for the greatest ritual efficiency. The Xochitecatl figurines are peculiar pieces in the Epiclassic altiplano context: they bring to light energical contacts with the Gulf Coast and the Tabasco maya area.
