  El libro de caballerías español de principios de siglo XVI todavía se apega a una geografía limitada al concepto medieval de orbis terrarum. El descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo tendrá un gran impacto en la ampliación del campo de acción de las aventuras de los héroes amadisianos, aunque no se explicite como tal. Una de las manifestaciones más claras de este impacto es el amalgama entre la materia artúrica y las materias de oriente y de Roma.

  Las expectativas sobre lo se podía encontrar en los confines de la tierra, junto con la creciente importancia de la aventura marítima y un cambio de sentido en la función de las islas como motivo en el texto caballeresco, permitirá que los seres monstruosos y mitológicos de la tradición griega compartan el escenario, aunque fugazmente, con la figura del caballero andante.

  The early sixteenth century Spanish romances of chivalry are still set in a geography very much akin to the medieval concept of the orbis terrarum. The discovery of the New World, even though it is not stated as such, will have a felt impact in expanding the settings of the knightly quest. One such impact is the bonding of the matter of Britain with that of the marvels of the East and the matter of Rome. The expectation about what could be found in the edges of the world, in addition to the growing importance of the maritime adventure and a new function of the isles as a chivalric motif, will open the door for monstrous and mythological beings from the Greek tradition to share the stage, though briefly, with the knight-errant.
