El argot médico: un registro discursivo complejizado por usos muy diversos

    Apoyados en el marco teórico que propone Guiomar Ciapuscio en Textos especializados y terminología (2003), y en especial en su concepto de “sistemas de multinivel”, nos planteamos en este trabajo tipologizar un registro poco estudiado hasta el momento: se trata de la jerga médica utilizada en forma oral, que presenta una riqueza insospechada por su variedad de matices y complejidad. En efecto, además de las características de lenguaje críptico, inaccesible a los no iniciados, el argot médico se distingue por no ser usado como protección propia frente a un tercero, tal como lo hacen otras jergas como el lenguaje de “germanía”, sino como protección de ese tercero (paciente o familiares) en señal de cortesía para atenuar el impacto emocional de comunicar información no grata. Sin embargo, el rasgo de auto-defensa no estaría ausente, si interpretamos como tal el uso del humor negro, el sarcasmo y hasta la vulgaridad, bastante frecuentes en este registro, que se justificarían como una actitud de protección del propio profesional médico frente al stress de convivir cotidianamente con situaciones límites (dolor y muerte, fundamentalmente). Esta función de protección del tercero y de auto-protección frente a experiencias traumáticas cotidianas, son componentes psico-socio-discursivos que tornan atractivo el estudio de este registro. La combinación de tan diversas variables nos ha permitido tipologizar este registro médico diferenciándolo en sub-registros, que dependen de la combinación de las mismas.

    Based on the theorical framework that Guiomar Ciapuscio suggests in Textos especializados y terminología (2003), and particularly in her concept of “multilevel systems”, we proposed to typify a register that has been hardly studied to present: the oral medical slang, that presents rich and varied nuances and complexity. The medical argot has characteristics of a criptic language, not accesible to the layman, but it is singular because it is not used as a protection in face of a third party, as other slangs such as “germanía” language is. Instead it is used as a protection of third parties (such as pacients or family members) in a courtesy signal to attenuate the emotional impact implied in the communication of unpleasant information. The self-defense trait may nevertheless be present if we take into account the sarcasm, humor and even vulgarity that are quite often found in the register. They could be justified as a protective attitude of the medic in view of the stressful experience of cohabiting with limit situations (pain and death mainly). This function of protection for third parties and of self – protection in face of traumatic day to day experiences are psico-social- discursive components that make the study of this register attractive.The combination of so diverse variables has allowed us to typify this medic register, differentiating it in sub registers that depend on the combinations of them.
