The main objective of this article is to examine the construction of ethos in a selection of linguistics research articles written by French PhDs and to compare it with the construction of ethos in articles written by established researchers. This construction of ethos is examined through different types of author manifestation or author roles: the role as writer, researcher and arguer. The findings show that the young researchers manifest themselves as “serious researchers”, respecting the norms of the genre, and as very explicit in their way of describing the research process, clearly conscious of their task of guiding the reader.
