The concept of cycloid psychosis has been developed and modified over time. Although this diagnosis is not included in currently used diagnostic manuals, numerous patients could be included in this controversial category. We present the case of a woman who fulfilled the classical criteria for cycloid psychosis. This entity is reviewed, from both the diagnostic and prognostic points of view. In addition, the advisability of using antipsychotic and mood stabilizing drugs in the acute and maintenance phases of the illness is discussed.
