    This article establishes the chronology and authorship of the renowned altarpiece of the Transfiguration of the Tortosa Cathedral, beginning with the agreements that took place in 1498 between the painters Rafael Vergós and Pere Alemany from Barcelona and the Tortosa priest Antonio Alcañiz. Having established the basis of the contract and when it was made, issues strongly debated since the 1920s, we can rule out the direct participation of James Huguet and review the style of the artists involved, especially Rafael Vergós, in the last decade of the fifteenth century. We can then assess the consequences of the new approach to the subject matter with regard to the “Huguet-Vergós” question. Finally, the paper concludes with some brief thoughts on the particular features of the iconography of these images from Tortosa.Keywords: Gothic painting, Tortosa Cathedral, Rafael Vergós, Pere Alemany, Jaume Huguet, Vergós studio.

    En aquest article s’estableix l’autoria i cronologia del conegut retaule de la Transfiguració de la catedral de Tortosa, a partir de l’encapçalament d’uns pactes que van tenir lloc el 1498, entre els pintors de Barcelona Rafael Vergós i Pere Alemany i el prevere de Tortosa Antoni Alcanyís. Establertes les bases de la contractació del conjunt i el moment de la seva realització, aspectes  molt discutits per la crítica des de la dècada de 1920, és possible descartar una intervenció directa de Jaume Huguet i revisar l’estil dels pintors implicats, en especial de Rafael Vergós, dins la darrera dècada del segle XV. A continuació es poden valorar també les conseqüències que deriven del nou enfocament del tema en l’anomenada qüestió «Huguet-Vergós». Finalment es presenten algunes breus consideracions sobre les particularitats de la iconografia del conjunt pictòric tortosí.Paraules clau: pintura gòtica, catedral de Tortosa, Rafael Vergós, Pere Alemany, Jaume Huguet, taller dels Vergós.
