Resumen de ¿Cuchillos del sacrificio? El papel del contexto en la expresión pictórica mesoamericana

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar los múltiples significados del signo de cuchillo de pedernal cuando éste aparece en forma gráfica. Se observa que dicho elemento puede aparecer como de uno de los indicadores de sacrificio o de autosacrificio, pero también como señal de la fuerza de creación. Puede ser un adorno destacable de los guerreros, pero también sustituir los dientes o la lengua en imágenes de la tierra. Estos “juegos de sustituciones” se basan en relaciones metafóricas entre los signos, y es notable su uso a nivel visual. Al comparar las expresiones en otros medios –como son las lingüísticas, míticas y comportamientos rituales–, en las que aparece el cuchillo de pedernal, resulta evidente que el contexto modifica fuertemente las connotaciones de este elemento. Dicho de otra manera, se concluye que en la expresión gráfica mesoamericana, lo que forma el significado de un signo dado son las interrelaciones con otros signos presentes en la misma imagen. Al mismo tiempo, éstas mismas hacen que otra connotación suya sea más destacable.

The aim of this article is to present multiple meanings of the flint knife sign when used in graphic forms. This element can appear as one of the indicators of the sacrifice or the autosacrifice, but also as a sign of the creative force. It can be used as one of the important adornments of the warriors, but it can also substitute the teeth or the tongue of the Earth in its graphic form. This “substitution play” is based on the metaphorical relation between these signs, and their use in visual form is characteristic in some kind of Mesoamerican graphic expression. By comparing the flint knife when appearing in other means – like the linguistic expressions, mythical accounts and ritual use – the conclusion is drawn that the context modify strongly the connotations of this sign. In other words, in the Mesoamerican graphic expression, the meaning of the sign is constructed by its interrelations with the neighboring sings, and right these interrelations make other connotations of the sign be emphasized.
