Resumen de Los primeros fotógrafos franceses en el Alto Aragón

Bajo este título pretendemos hacer un repaso tanto de los principales fotógrafos franceses que visitaron la provincia de Huesca desde los inicios de la fotografía hasta finales del primer tercio del siglo XX como de la visión que a través de sus trabajos y sus escritos, si los hay, dieron de este territorio. Aunque el planteamiento que vamos a hacer es eminentemente cronológico, hay una evolución paralela en el uso de la fotografía. Al principio se utilizó como un sustituto de las litografías de las bellezas del Pirineo que los turistas se llevaban a sus casas, e incluso se buscaba un componente artístico en las imágenes. Sin embargo, pronto pasó a ser un instrumento fundamental al servicio de la ciencia y la cartografía. Poco después, con la generalización de las cámaras fotográficas, se alió con el turismo, y por último con los deportes de montaña. En este artículo no podemos hablar de todos los fotógrafos franceses que tomaron imágenes del Alto Aragón, ni siquiera en nuestro periodo de referencia; por ello hemos elegido en cada uno de los apartados aquellos a los que consideramos más significativos y a cuya obra hemos tenido acceso de forma directa, fundamentalmente a través de las colecciones del Musée Pyrénéen de Lourdes, la Bibliothèque Nationale de France y la Société Française de Photographie, a los cuales agradecemos las facilidades prestadas para su consulta.

Under this heading, we intend to review the most relevant French photographers who visited the province of Huesca since the beginning of photography until the end of the first third of the 20th century. We will also attempt to review the kind of imagery they projected of this territory through their work and, in some cases, their writings. Although our approach is mainly chronological, there is a parallel evolution in the use of photography. At first, it was used as a substitute for the lithographs portraying the beauty of the Pyrenees that tourists took home and often intended to be artistic. However, it soon became a key instrument in the service of science and cartography. Shortly after, when cameras became widely used, it began to be associated with tourism and then finally with mountain sports.
In this article we cannot mention every French photographer who took pictures of the Alto Aragon, even if we filtered by the specific periods this study focuses on.
We have, therefore, selected those we consider most relevant for each period. Our selection is also based on the work we had direct access to, mainly through the collections of the Lourdes’ Pyrenean Museum, the French National Library and the French Photography Society, to which we are grateful for facilitating our research.
