  • Resumen
    • In Colombia, there are populations that have wells, public basins and rivers as a source of water supply. For this reason, comes the need to develop and evaluate mechanisms to improve the physical, chemical and microbiological conditions of the water used for human consumption in these regions. This article describes the process of designing and building a prototype of solar still, used to determine the factors influencing their performance. It is expected that once identified these factors will allow to establish optimized operating criteria. The prototype was tested in uncontrolled environmental conditions, measuring temperature, solar radiation and volume of distilled water. The trend lines obtained between the distillate volume in function of the incident solar radiation, the temperature difference between the water and the air inside the still and between the air and the condenser in real operating conditions, allowed to define the optimum design parameters. After analyzing the results, a linear relationship between the solar radiation and the distillate volume was observed, in addition to a distillate volume dependence with the temperature differences present between water, air and the condenser within the still.
