Global magnesia demand in 2012 was at 10.5m tonnes, of which DBM accounted for 7.55m tonnes, and FM for 800,000 tonnes. Caustic calcined magnesia accounted for 2.2m tonnes of demand, [Paul Schipper] said.
"There is a shift towards higher grade refractories and thus, higher grade magnesia," he said. "Investments are being made on higher grade DBM and FM".
While total DBM, CCM and FM exports in 2012 were at just below 1.4m tonnes (2011: 1.2m tonnes), low grade magnesia exports have slipped since 2010, from 1m tonnes to 800,000 tonnes.
