Since the era of the radio —when television was not yet even in the project phase— the contest format has been a discrete but frequently employed leading player in the entertainment genre. At times it has functioned as the ally of magazines, of commercial products or of music programs, although, inevitably, the contest or quiz began to acquire more independence and to develop its own personality; and when television appeared, there was quickly a gap to fill in the programming of every channel. The televised contest, versatile, constant and chameleon-like, has known how to survive, adapting to fashions and trends, developing different models to cover different programming timeslots and adapting itself to different types of audiences. This article presents a journey through the different models of television contests and their evolution within television programming in Spain.
