El artículo sostiene que, en el estudio de la pobreza, situarse desde el principio en el "eje del nivel de vida", como lo hacen casi todos los autores, impide la adecuada identificación de los "elementos constitutivos" de este eje. Como opción se plantea ampliar la perspectiva, partir del "eje del florecimiento humano" (donde el ser humano se encuentra completo) y "recortar" su contenido para arribar al del eje del nivel de vida. En el eje del florecimiento humano es donde puede desarrollarse la reflexión sobre las "necesidades y capacidades humanas" que, a su vez, debe fundamentarse en una discusión sistemática sobre la "esencia humana". La identificación de los pobres es una operación de corte (la definición del umbral) en el eje del nivel de vida, en el cual sólo se consideran los elementos económicos de las necesidades y capacidades humanas. Estos son los temas que se desarrollan en la primera parte de este ensayo, apoyándose, entre otros, en las ideas de Marx (tal como las ha interpretado Giörgy Markus) y en las de Abraham Maslow, mientras en la segunda se presenta un esquema preliminar de los elementos determinantes del florecimiento humano.

The article sustains that when the study of poverty is located from the very beginning in the axis of the living standard, as most authors do, the constitutive elements of this axis cannot be properly identified. The option is to adopt a broader perspective and start within the axis of human flourishing (where the total human being is the object of study) and reduce its content to arrive atthe axis of the living standard. It is in the axis of human flourishing where reflections onhuman needs and human capacities can take place, which should be founded on a theory of human essence. The identification of the poor is a cutting operation within the axis of the living standard, where only the economic elements of human needs and capacities are considered. These are the themes developed in the first part of the essay, on the bases, among other authors, of Marx (as interpreted by Giörgy Markus) and Abraham Maslow. In the second part of the essay a preliminary version of the determinant elements of human flourishing is presented.
