Resumen de Applying the Brief Survey in Taiwan's High-Tech Industries

Kai-Way Li, Yau-Wen Hsu, Chih-Hung Tsai

  • This research intends to discover any ergonomic risk factors that may cause musculoskeletal symptoms to employees in semiconductor, computer, and communications industries in Hsin-Chu Science-based Industrial Park in Taiwan. In addition to onsite interviews, the BRIEF (Baseline Risk Identification of Ergonomic Factors) survey is conducted for on-job analysis. The analysis reveals that employees’ subjective experience is not necessarily consistent with the results from the objective survey. The survey results show that unnatural postures at work increase the risk of neck, shoulders, hands, and legs injuries in semiconductor industry; neck, hands, back, and legs injuries in computer industry; neck, hands, and back injuries in communications industry. The comparison by the BRIEF scores shows that there is a significantly higher risk of left shoulder and left elbow disorders in semiconductor industry than the other two industries.
