    L’obra de John Dewey es coneix, sobretot, per les seves aportacions en l’àmbit de la teoria de l’educació. La vessant de Dewey com a pedagog sovint ha eclipsat les seves reflexions com a filòsof de la democràcia. D’altra banda, tant el republi-canisme com la teoria deliberativa s’han apropiat, a la seva manera, de l’obra de Dewey. Això ha contribuït a una difusió del pensament polític de Dewey en clau repu-blicana, o bé en clau deliberativa. Tanmateix, la teoria de la democràcia de Dewey té certes particularitat que fan inviable la seva equiparació amb el republicanisme i amb la teoria deliberativa. En aquest text ens centrarem en les diferències que allunyen Dewey de la perspectiva deliberativa de Habermas. Com veurem, aquestes diferències giren al voltant d’una idea central en l’obra de Dewey: l’individualisme de la democràcia.

    The work of John Dewey is known especially for his contributions in the field of educational theory. The facet of Dewey as a pedagogue has often overshadowed his thoughts as a philosopher of democracy. On the other hand, both Republicanism and Deliberative Theory have taken, each in their own way, the work of Dewey. This has con-tributed to spread Dewey's political thought in the light of Republicanism and Deliberative Theory. However, Dewey´s theory of democracy has some peculiarities which make un-feasible its comparison with both Republicanism and Deliberative Theory. This text focus-es on the differences keeping Dewey away from Habermas' deliberative perspective. As we shall see, these differences turn around a central idea in Dewey's work: the individualism of democracy.
