    • Argentinian rural crime fiction, featuring a sheriff as the main the protagonist, has been seen by critics as the result of the translation of crime fiction into a local setting. However, very little has been written about the the difference of having a rural policeman in charge of the investigation. A deeper look into both the specific role of rural police and that of rural societies displays a set of characteristics that distinguish this subgenre from others. This article seeks to reveal these differences through the analysis of works by Velmiro Ayala Gauna and Rodolfo Walsh, and their fictional sheriffs: don Frutos Gómez and Laurenzi
