  • Resumen
    • Erysiphe necator is the causal agent of powdery mildew in the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). V. vinifera is a member of the Vitaceae family which contains over 700 species in 14 genera. Although V. vinifera is highly susceptible to Erysiphe necator, other species within the Vitaceae family have been reported to show powdery mildew resistance, but little is known about the mechanistic basis of this resistance. Therefore, the frequency of E. necator penetration events, in addition to programmed cell death (PCD) responses, were investigated in a representative genotype from a range of different members of the Vitaceae family. The results reveal that penetration resistance and PCD-mediated responses or combinations of both are employed by members of the Vitaceae genera to limit E. necator infection. Potential, new sources of resistance were also identified.
