Mientras para muchos liberales el nacionalismo representa una amenaza a la democracia, otros filósofos multiculturalistas, entre ellos Will Kymlicka, defienden que las reivindicaciones nacionalistas pueden ser consistentes con los principios liberales de libertad y justicia.
El argumento central para proteger a las minorías nacionales es que los principios liberales de libertad y justicia están íntimamente vinculados a la cultura societal propia, de modo que las democracias occidentales deberían permitir y proteger las minorías nacionales. No obstante, la política multicultural tiene dos límites de tolerancia: primero, los derechos de las minorías no deben permitir que un grupo oprima a otros grupos; y segundo, tampoco deben permitir que un grupo oprima a sus miembros

While for many liberals nationalism represents a threat to democracy, other multicultural philosophers, Will Kymlicka among them, defend the idea that nationalist demands can be consistent with the liberal principles of freedom and justice. The fundamental argument to protect national minorities is that the liberal principles of freedom and justice are intimately linked to one’s own societal culture, in such a way that western democracies should not only allow national minorities, but should also protect them. However, multicultural politics has two tolerance limits: firstly, the rights of the minority must not allow one group to oppress other groups; and secondly, the rights of the minority must not allow a group to oppress its own members
