    El ensayo** hace una detallada revisión de la existencia, en Cartagena, de un pensa­miento racial sistemático entre finales del siglo XVIII y la primera mitad del siglo XX, teniendo como marco el discurso de la nación colombiana. Durante el transcur­so de este tiempo las élites que se dieron a la tarea de imaginar proyectos nacionales hicieron alusión a los componentes negros, mulatos e indígenas que hacían parte de sus respectivas formaciones sociales, como bárbaros, inferiores e incivilizados. Este es el marco en el que intelectuales afrocolom­bianos como Jorge Artel y Juan José Nieto desarrollaron su ardua y productiva labor literaria y periodística.

    ABSTRACT: this essay develops a detailed revision of the existence of a systematic racial way of thinking during the end of the XVIII Century and the first half of the XX Cen­tury in Cartagena, having as a reference the Colombian Nation discourse. During this time, the elites that decided to work on the configuration of national projects made reference to the “negro”, mulatto and indigenous components that belon­ged to their own social structure and were seen as barbarians, inferior and uncivilized people. This is the framework in which the Afro-Colombian intellectuals such as Jor­ge Artel and Juan José Nieto developed their hard and productive literary and jo­urnalistic work.
