It is argued that the in-control average run length (ARL) can be a confusing measure when used with charts with estimated limits, and that the rate of false signals (RFS) is more intuitive. The RFS highlights the risk of using too few subgroups to estimate control limits. Also discussed are diffidence charts, which make the uncertainty concerning RFS observable, thus helping the practitioner determine the acceptable number of subgroups for a specified charting application.
