    Thinking modernism from India raises important theoretical, poetic and aesthetic questions, which this article aims at discussing, by examining the practices of artists and writers from Bombay, Allahabad and Baroda. Thinking modernism from India means thinking both a singular history and a connected history ; it means substituting the notion of translation, understood as an experience or expression of difference and as renewal, for the question of the origin of modernity or for the paradigm of influence. It means, in a word, examining the practices of collage, assemblage and recycling which these works of art and literature manifest, and which also point to the multiple worlds these artists belong to.

    Cet article se propose de réfléchir aux questionnements théoriques, poétiques et esthétiques d’un modernisme à partir de l’Inde, en particulier à partir des pratiques d’artistes et d’écrivains de Bombay, d’Allahabad et de Baroda. Penser le modernisme à partir de l’Inde c’est penser une histoire singulière et une histoire connectée, c’est substituer à la question de l’origine de la modernité, ou au paradigme de l’influence, la notion de traduction, comme expérience ou manifestation de la différence et comme renouvellement, c’est enfin s’intéresser aux pratiques de collage, d’assemblage et de recyclage dont témoignent ces oeuvres et qui sont le signe de la pluralité des mondes auxquels ces artistes appartiennent.
