Variation attributed to a measurement system is generally assessed by repeatedly measuring a number of parts in a balanced design. This study considers two types of unbalanced assessment plans that use a standard plan augmented with a second component. The goal is to identify good augmented plans for estimating the gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) ratio. It is shown that the use of the appropriate augmented plan can produce increased efficiency for estimating GR&R when compared to a standard plan with the same number of measurements.
