El Cántico del Hermano Sol, dictado por el hermano Francisco en los dos últimos años de su vida (1225-26), refleja una espiritualidad de "alabanza"que se divide en tres partes: "conocer" a Dios, que es "el bien, todo bien, sumo bien"; "reconocer" que el Dios de la bondad, la verdad y la belleza se refleja en toda la creación; "devolver" todo bien a su fuente original a través del gesto de "alabanza". Eso es lo que el hermano Francisco hace después de una noche de mucho sufrimiento, confortado por la promesa divina de salvación (certificatio), a la que responde invitando a la "alabanza" de Dios a toda creación: el radiante "Hermano Sol", "hermana luna y las estrellas", el aire y "el hermano viento", "hermana agua" "humilde y preciosa", "el hermano fuego"que ilumina la noche, "la hermana de madre tierra" que nos da de comer, e incluso la "enfermedad y tribulación" y "la hermana muerte", no va a hacer ningún daño a aquellos "que encontrará en la santísima voluntad" del Señor, a quien dirige tambiçen el elogio final: "alabad y bendecid a mi Señor y agradecedle y servidle con gran humildad".

The Canticle of Brother Sun, dictated by Brother Francis in the last two-year period of his life (1225-1226), reflects a spirituality of "praise" that develops in three stages: "to know" God, Who is "the good, all that is good, the supreme Good"; "to acknowledge" that God, Who is goodness, truth and beauty, is reflected in the whole of creation; "to give back" all that is good to its originating source, through the giving of "praise". It is this that Brother Francis does after a night of grave suffering , consoled by the divine promise of salvation (certificatio), to which he responds inviting to give "praise" to God the whole of creation: the radiant "brother Sun", "sister Moon and the stars", "our sister mother Earth", who nourishes us, and even "infirmity and tribulation" and "our sister bodily Death", who will not do any harm to those "whom she will find dwelling in the most holy will" of the Lord, to Whom is addressed the concluding praise: "Praise and bless my Lord and thank/ and serve Him with great humility".
