    Politicized Ethnicity along Central America's Atlantic Coast This article examines the relationship between class and ethnicity by comparing three ethnic mobilizations on the Caribbean Coast of Central America among : 1) West Indian immigrants in the 1920s ; 2) Guaymi Amerindians in the 1960s ; and 3) Miskitu Amerindians in the 1980s. Traditional political economy's resolution of the material reality versus culture divide through the notion of a dialectic is discarded in favor of a more dynamic focus on the experience of oppression which allows ethnicity to be an organic dimension of material social processes that is in no way subordinate to economic forces. The three case studies provide examples of "conjugated oppression" where economic exploitation and ideological domination combine to become more than the sum of their parts and to express themselves in dramatic political mobilization.

    La mobilisation ethnique Cet article examine les relations entre classe et ethnie, en comparant trois mobilisations ethniques survenues sur la côte caraïbe d'Amérique centrale : les Indiens venus de l'Ouest, dans les années 1920 ; les Amérindiens Guaymi dans les années 1960 ; les Amérindiens Miskitu, dans les années 1980. L'auteur récuse la décomposition traditionnelle et politique de l'économie en réalité matérielle et culturelle. Se centrant sur l'expérience de l'oppression, il montre que l'appartenance ethnique est partie intégrante de processus sociaux tout à fait matériels, sans pour autant être subordonnée aux forces économiques. L'"oppression combinée" qu'on retrouve dans ces trois exemples mêle l'exploitation économique et la domination symbolique ; elle excède la somme de ces composants et s'exprime à travers une mobilisation politique radicale.

    Ethnische Mobilisierung Der Artikel untersucht das Verhältnis von Klasse und ethnischem Bewußtsein anhand des Vergleichs dreier ethnischer Mobilisierungen an der Karibik-Küste Mittelamerikas : die in den zwanziger Jahren aus dem Westen gekommenen Indianer, die Amerindianer Guaymi in den sechziger Jahren und die Amerindianer Miskitu in den Achtzigern. Der Autor bestreitet die herkömmliche, politische Trennung der Wirtschaft in materielle und kulturelle Gegebenheiten. Sich auf den Unterdriickungsaspekt konzentrierend, zeigt er auf, inwiefern ethnische Zugehörigkeit in ganz materielle, soziale Prozesse integral eingebunden ist, ohne jedoch den wirtschaftlichen Kräften untergeordnet zu sein. Die an den drei Beispielen sichtbar werdende "kombinierte Unterdriickung" mischt auf Symbolik beruhende Herrschaft und wirtschaftliche Ausbeutung ineinander; sie übersteigt dabei die Summe ihrer Teile und driickt sich in radikaler, politischer Mobilisierung aus.
