  The Ordinary Violence of a Brazilian City Alarming rumours about the traffic in organs or the theft of children and quasi-ontological anxiety and insecurity about the ownership of one's own body are maintained by the indifference of « the bureaucracy » towards the life and death of the shanty-town « marginals » - unemployed migrants from the country, young delinquents, street children and the poorest of the poor. The public rituals which bring the shanty-town people into contact with the State, at the hospital, the registrar's office, the mortuary and the town cernetery do indeed weave the context for a banalization of horror. Within this framework, apparently incomprehensible and unpredictable events - such as « disappearances » and torture - become a predictable and expected norm for ail those who have been made socially insignificant.

  Mourir en silence La violence ordinaire d'une ville brésilienne Les rumeurs alarmantes sur les trafics d'organes ou les vols d'enfants, l'inquiétude et l'insécurité quasi ontologiques sur la propriété de son propre corps sont entretenues par l'indifférence de « la bureaucratie » à l'égard de la vie et de la mort des « marginaux » du bidonville : les chômeurs venus de la campagne, les jeunes délinquants, les enfants des rues et les plus démunis parmi les pauvres. En effet, les rituels publics qui mettent les gens du bidonville en contact avec l'État, à l'hôpital, au bureau d'état civil, à la morgue, au cimetière municipal, tissent le contexte d'une banalisation de l'horreur. Dans ce cadre, des événements en apparence incompréhensibles et imprévisibles - comme « les disparitions » et la torture — deviennent une norme prévisible et attendue pour tous ceux qu'on a rendus socialement insignifiants.

  Sterben in der Stille Die alltägliche Gewalt einer brasilianischen Stadt Alarmierende Meldungen über Organ-Handel und Raub von Kinder und eine quasi-ontologische Beunruhigung und Unsicherheit über den Besitz des eigenen Körpers werden in nichts durch die Gleichgültigkei« der Bürokratie » gegenüber dem Leben und Sterben der « Marginalen » der Elendsviertel, d.h. den vom Land zugewanderten Arbeitslosen, jugendlichen Delinquenten, auf der Strasse lebenden Kindern und den Armsten der Armen dementiert öffentliche Rituale, durch die zwischen den Menschen der Elendsviertel und dem Staat, dem Krankenhaus, dem Standesamt, dem Leichenhaus und dem Gemeinde-Friedhof ein Kontakt entsteht, weben in der Tat nur den Kontext einer Banalisierung des Grauens.
