In some cases, the p-percentile function of residual life (PRL-p) can be used to determine the optimal duration for a burn-in and the maximum allowable warranty period. This article presents some of the properties of the change point where the PRL-p reaches maximum value. Using derivations based on this change point, a set of desirable burn-in durations and maximum warranty periods can be estimated in situations where life-test data is available. An example using the modified Weibull extension model illustrates the procedure.
