This paper proposes a multinomial cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart for monitoring when there is a specifiable direction for out-of-control shift, items can be classified into more than two categories, and the items are not put into subgroups. Examples demonstrate that multinomial CUSUM charts can detect shifts in category probabilities as fast or faster than multiple Bernoulli CUSUM charts. The authors recommend using multiple Bernoulli CUSUM charts if the direction of the out-of-control shift in the parameter vector cannot be specified.
