This paper differs from other examinations of process parameters in that it deals with three-dimensional shapes with curves in space rather than curves that lie on a plane. Modeling is done with complex principal component analysis (PCA), a generalization of PCA that uses complex rather than real numbers. Complex PCA is not sensitive to rotation about the origin and is a superior method of detecting the effect of controllable factors on profile shape. A case study in determining the straightness of lathe-turned items demonstrates this method’s suitability in determining characteristics related to geometric tolerances.
