L'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a reconnu en juillet 2010 le droit de l'homme à I'eau et à I'assainissement dans un vote sans opposition. Au Conseil des droits de l'homme en septembre 2010, les Etats-Unis, qui avaient longtemps combattu cette reconnaissance, changeaient de positlon. En revanche, beaucoup reste à faire pour que le droit à l'eau et à I'assainissement devienne un droit effectif. L'article donne un aperçu des diverses initiatives prises depuis cinq ans pour que le droit a I'eau et a l'assainissement soit finalement reconnu en 2010 comme un droit de l'homme.

In Ju/y 2010, the General Assembly of the UN recognized the human right to water and sanitation, without any opposition. In September 2010, at the meeting of the Council of Human Rights, the USA, that had for long opposed such recognition, changed their position. On the other side, much remains to be done in order to make this recognition effective. The article gives an oveNiew of the various initiatives taken in the last five years in order to obtain the final recognition of the right to water and sanitation as a human right.
