    Para atraer a los turistas en el occidente de México, se promueve la cultura de sus pueblos indígenas y se acentúa su “autenticidad” y “exotismo”, en particular de los huicholes o wixáritari. Los artistas y artesanos huicholes están conscientes de la imagen que reflejan y han sabido desarrollar su artesanía y arte con el turismo. La venta de arte y artesanía huicholes puede ser un negocio lucrativo. Otros actores buscan apropiarse de la cultura huichola, de su cosmovisión e iconografía: instituciones gubernamentales, comerciantes, agencias de viaje, coleccionistas, etc. Se analiza la relación ambigua y conflictiva que une a estos actores, y las adaptaciones y estrategias que aplican los artistas y artesanos huicholes en este contexto.

    In order to attract tourists to western Mexico, the culture of its indigenous people, especially of the Huichol or Wixáritari, is promoted by emphasizing their “authenticity” and “exoticism”. The Huichol artists and craftsmen are well aware of the image that they project and have learned to develop their art and craft along with tourism. The selling of Huichol art and crafts can be very lucrative and for that reason many other actors aim to appropriate the Huichol culture, world view and iconography: governmental institutions, traders, travel agencies, collectors, etc. In this paper, the ambiguous and problematic relation that connects these actors, and the adaptations and strategies that the Huichol artists and craftsmen are using to adapt to this context will be analyzed.
