"Deus caritas est": bases para a operacionalização da noção de éthos

    This paper aims to study the relations between the deep level of the generative path of meaning and enunciative level in the framework of tensive semiotics (Zilberberg, 2006), which enables an articulation of the semiotic theory and the new rhetoric (see Meyer 2007 and Perelman; Olbrechts-Tyteca, 2005). In this light, we investigate the semiotic notion of style in order to bring together the stylistic approach to discourse and the tensive view. We seek, therefore, to provide the basis for the operationalization of the concept of ethos, observed in the religious diffusion discourse of the encyclical “Deus Caritas Est”, a document promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI on 25 December 2005. The analysis of the encyclical revealed a style marked by its doctrinal content, clarity, references to the Latin language and the effect of indisputableness created by the use of the biblical narrative. Thus, we conclude that the ethos apprehended is that of a superior tone of voice, tied to the values of tradition. Moreover, we also found the ethos to be that of a Catholic intellectual, a theologian who wishes not only to transmit, but also to defend and build the foundations of a universal doctrine. Finally, in spite of its doctrinal and imperative qualities, this subject reveals traits of a benevolent image, as he includes other conceptions of love into the concept of caritas-ágape.

    Este trabalho tem por objetivo amplo desenvolver interpelações a respeito da conexão entre o nível profundo da geração do sentido e a instância enunciativa, respeitado o ponto de vista tensivo que, segundo Zilberberg (2006), torna possível a articulação da tensividade com a retórica. A fundamentação teórica utilizada, para atingirmos os objetivos do estudo proposto, consiste nas bases teóricas da semiótica greimasiana, de linha francesa, tomada também em seus desenvolvimentos tensivos por Zilberberg (2006) e os enfoques contemporâneos da Nova Retórica obtidos, principalmente, por meio dos trabalhos de Meyer (2007) e Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005). Desenvolvemos, dessa forma, a noção semiótica de estilo, com vistas às propostas de operacionalização da noção de éthos, conforme subsídios encontrados tanto numa estilística discursiva, como no referido “ponto de vista tensivo”. Procuramos, portanto, mediante essa conexão, fornecer as bases para a operacionalização da noção de éthos, observado no discurso de divulgação religiosa da carta encíclica “Deus caritas est”, documento promulgado pelo sumo pontífice Bento XVI, em 25 de dezembro de 2005. A análise da encíclica levou a caracterizá-la pela presença de um estilo marcado por conteúdo doutrinário, clareza, referências à língua latina e pelo efeito de inquestionabilidade, consumado pela utilização da narrativa bíblica fundadora, o que configura um éthos de tom de voz altivo e apegado aos valores da tradição. Observamos, assim, o éthos de um intelectual católico, de um teólogo que pretende defender, construindo e não apenas transmitindo, as bases de uma doutrina universal. Esse sujeito, apesar de seu caráter doutrinário e injuntivo, apresenta, ao mesmo tempo, traços de uma imagem benevolente, ao englobar em sua exposição da dimensão caritas-ágape as demais concepções de amor.
