    El tapiete (tupí-guaraní) es una lengua hablada en la región chaqueña de Argentina, Bolivia y Paraguay. En Argentina, los tapietes han atravesado un marcado proceso de cambio cultural y desplazamiento de la lengua indígena hacia el español, por lo que, actualmente, todos los hablantes de esta lengua indígena en ese país son bilingües. En el plano lingüístico, han sido documentados en el uso del tapiete diferentes fenómenos de contacto. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar algunas características y significados de la variación entre las formas ï y ë de la tercera persona del verbo 'estar', aparentemente motivada a partir del contacto con la lengua y cultura dominante. Desde un enfoque funcionalista de la variación y del cambio lingüístico, este trabajo explora los contextos comunicativos que favorecen la ocurrencia de cada una de las formas bajo estudio y los significados discursivos que éstas adoptan

    Tapiete (Tupí-guaraní) is a language spoken in the Chaco region in Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. In Argentina, tapiete people have suffered important cultural changes and shift of their indigenous language to Spanish. In present time, all speakers of Tapiete which live in this country are bilinguals. Linguistically, it has been documented different contact phenomena in the use of Tapiete. The aim of this article is to analyze the variation among the forms ï vs. ë in the third person of the verb 'to be', presumably induced by contact with the dominant language and culture. From a functionalist perspective in the study of variation and language change, this work explores communicative contexts that favor the occurrence of each of the forms under study, and its discursive meanings.
