  • Resumen
    • A short history of the cleaning of paintings in France in the first half of the 20th century.

From the beginning of the 19th century, the Musée du Louvre asserted its character as the reference for the restoration of easel paintings, and more specifically for their cleaning. It structured this discipline by setting up a competition, establishing a commission of restoration that accompanied and supervised the restoration interventions. Over the course of time, it was sustained by personalities from the Painting Departament, supported by scientists (notably photographers and chemists) in order to whatch over the precise character of the cleaning. In fact, the technique of the reduction of the varnishing sought and widely prescribed on a national and international level, that a structured team of restorers -all trained as painters- applied in the first half of the 20th century, set down the foundations of a technique still in use today.
