Le Remords rescued from oblivion. A painting by Louis-Marie Baader restored in 2016 at the Musée d'Orsay.
Painted for the Salon of 1875, where it was acquires by the State, "Le Remords (Remorse)" by Louise-Marie Baader (1828-1920) has never been exhibited since the opening of the Musée d'Orsay, because of its poor condition (tears and deformations of the canvas, alterations in the original material of the layers of paint, presence of corrosive projections and of heterogeneus cracking). This monumental painting was restored for the celebration of the thirty years of the museum in 2016, within the framework of a program of renovation of the large format academic works. This operation, which benefitted from philantropic sponsorship, was carried out in the galleries, in a glass enclosed area, set up so that the restorers could work in full view of the public.
