    The first books intended for Brazilian children were published in the early nineteenth century. Since the beginning, they were characterized by an umbilical connection with the school, necessarily presenting an educational component. But they established a market of its own and, before the beginning of the twentieth century, they paved the way for the strengthening of children's literature as a literary genre

    Os primeiros livros destinados à infância brasileira foram publicados nas primeiras décadas do século XIX. Desde o início, caracterizaram-se por sua ligação umbilical com a escola, apresentando necessariamente um componente didático. Mas estabeleceram um mercado com identidade própria e abriram caminho, antes do século XX, para o fortalecimento da literatura infantil enquanto gênero literário.
