  • The article focuses on research of pilot fuel efficiency at Virgin Atlantic Airways. Fuel use monitoring was found to change behavior and a mix of monitoring and reporting with rewards was more effective at both reducing air pollution and improving pilot morale. This study is reported in “A New Approach to an Age-Old Problem: Solving Externalities by Incenting Workers Directly,” by K. Greer , John A. List, and Robert Metcalfe, a National Bureau of Economic Research working paper.
