La tecnología al servicio de la táctica: evolución del empleo táctico de la artillería durante el Siglo de las Luces

    El siglo XVIII fue, sin duda, un periodo de grandes adelantos técnicos que incidieron en muchos campos de la vida, entre ellos, en el ámbito de la milicia y especialmente en la artillería. Por primera vez en la historia todo en la guerra parece susceptible de ser cuantificado, de ser reducido a cálculos matemáticos: la poliorcética alcanza una extrema perfección, los avances en balística permiten sistematizar el tiro artillero, la instrucción del soldado se mecaniza y el ejército se transforma en una máquina cuyas prestaciones en combate dependen en buena medida del óptimo engranaje de cada pieza en el conjunto. El objeto de este trabajo, una de las dos ponencias españolas presentadas en el 38.º Congreso Internacional de Historia Militar (Sofía, 2012), es analizar la integración de la artillería en los dispositivos tácticos planteados por los generales, es decir, el empleo de la artillería en batalla campal junto a las otras Armas. Desde el punto de vista artillero, la revolución más importante que se produjo en esta centuria fue el progresivo aligeramiento de los materiales y la creciente contribución del Arma al éxito de los ejércitos en batalla. Por ello nos limitaremos a reflejar esta evolución de forma sistemática y sin perder de vista las soluciones de otros países considerados en su momento más avanzados militarmente que España.

    The eighteenth century was a period of great technological advances affecting many areas of life, armies among them and, particularly, the artillery.

    For the first time in History all in the war seemed likely to be quantified, to be reduced to mathematical calculations: the war of siege reached an extreme perfection, advances in ballistics helped to systematize the shelling, the drill became automated and the armies transformed into a fighting machine whose benefits depended largely on the precision of each piece in the set. The aim of this paper, which was one of the two Spanish contributions to the 38th Congress of Military History (Sofia, 2012), is to analyse the integration of the artillery into the tactical deployments, that is, the role of the artillery in the battlefield aside the other elements of combat. Focusing on the eighteenth century, the most important military improvement was the gradual lightening of the materials and the increasing contribution of the artillery to the success of the armies in battle. So, we will just reflect systematically this evolution without losing sight of the solutions given by other countries considered more advanced, militarily talking, than Spain.
