Translational Activism and the Decolonization of Culture

    Best known as a poet and pro-democracy militant, Abdellatif Laâbi is also a prolific translator of Arabic poetry and prose. Beyond the important work of cross-cultural transmission and dialogue, the translator performs. Laâbi is in a profound sense a translator-activist: a writer who uses translation in order to lend his voice to causes that are not his own. This essay proposes to investigate translation as a form of activism and a figure of militancy in Laâbi’s work. I argue that Laâbi’s translations of Arabic literature, in particular Palestinian literature, constitute an integral, albeit less visible, part of his militant parcours and œuvre. I read Laâbi’s translations of Palestinian poetry alongside his own militant poetry and later autobiographical texts in order to show that Laâbi’s translational commitments have profoundly shaped his approach to decolonizing Moroccan culture. Understood in this expansive, multidirectional sense, translation becomes a medium and figure for what I call transcolonial identification: identification with the colonized or postcolonized other on the basis of a shared experience of colonization, writ large to include classic and new forms of political and cultural dominance in the purportedly postcolonial present

    Connu en tant que poète et militant, Abdellatif Laâbi est également un grand traducteur de la littérature arabe. Au-delà du rôle important qu’il occupe en tant que diffuseur de la culture arabe, Laâbi est également un traducteur militant, un écrivain qui traduit afin de prêter sa voix à la cause de l’autre. Cet article se propose d’analyser la traduction en tant que forme et figure du militantisme dans l’œuvre de Laâbi. Nous lirons les traductions de Laâbi en parallèle à ses poèmes militants et à ses textes autobiographiques afin de montrer que ses engagements «translationnels» auprès des Palestiniens ont profondément investi son rapport à la décolonisation culturelle du Maroc. Dans ce sens élargi et multidirectionnel, la traduction devient un outil et une figure de ce que nous appellerons l’i dentification transcoloniale: l’identification avec l’autre colonisé ou postcolonisé sur la base d’une expérience partagée de la colonisation dans un sens élargi qui comprend différentes formes de domination politique et culturelle dans la période postcoloniale
